Appendix A

Reading through Appendix A I found myself saying “I’ve heard of that before” but didn’t necessarily have a full understanding of it. The first piece that stood out to me was about the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN for short and its creation of Top-Level Domains or TLDs. Its funny to think about how many times I’ve entered .com, not knowing it stood for commercial. The only two I would say I was actually familiar with was .gov and .edu because it seemed obvious. The amount of information you can derive from a website just by looking at the end of its URL was far more than I expected.

In addition to the first piece, I was surprised to read that the first concept that led to the creation of the internet as we know it today was a missile defense system. Its hard to fathom that Advanced Research Project Agency, or ARPA, that was creating the weapons system was the ones who also created email. In a lot of ways, I learned that we haven’t necessarily had new breakthroughs in the internet, but more just refined software or protocols from previous breakthroughs. I was unaware that remote access was created all the way back in 1981 as an Internet Protocol called Telnet. When I think of Remote Access in todays time I think of Remote Desktop, which as I understand is basically telnet with a graphic interface. I'm curious to read more in upcoming chapters to see if more things were new inventions or just perfected older ideas.
